Bosons in anisotropic traps: Ground state and vortices.

چکیده
We solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equations for a dilute atomic gas in a magnetic trap, modeled by an anisotropic harmonic potential. We evaluate the wave function and the energy of the Bose Einstein condensate as a function of the particle number, both for positive and negative scattering length. The results for the transverse and vertical size of the cloud of atoms, as well as for the kinetic and potential energy per particle, are compared with the predictions of approximated models. We also compare the aspect ratio of the velocity distribution with first experimental estimates available for Rb. Vortex states are considered and the critical angular velocity for production of vortices is calculated. We show that the presence of vortices significantly increases the stability of the condensate in the case of attractive interactions. PACS numbers: 03.75.Fi, 05.30.Jp, 32.80.Pj Typeset using REVTEX 1

Spinor Bose Condensates in Optical Traps
In an optical trap, the ground state of spin-1 Bosons such as 23Na, 39K, and 87Rb can be either a ferromagnetic or a “polar” state, depending on the scattering lengths in different angular momentum channel. The collective modes of these states have very different spin character and spatial distributions. While ordinary vortices are stable in the polar state, only those with unit circulation are...

In a recent article in this journal I pointed out that the harmonic oscillator potential used to model most experiments on Bose–Einstein condensation of atomic gases simplifies the numerical analysis. In this note I extend my previous analysis to allow for anisotropic confining potentials. This extension yields a better comparison with real experiments ~which are performed in anisotropic confin...
متن کاملBosonic molecules in rotating traps.
We present a variational many-body wave function for repelling bosons in rotating traps, focusing on rotational frequencies that do not lead to restriction to the lowest Landau level. This wave function incorporates correlations beyond the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) mean-field approximation, and it describes rotating boson molecules (RBMs) made of localized bosons that form polygonal-ring-like cryst...
متن کاملLow-Energy Properties of a One-dimensional System of Interacting Bosons with Boundaries
– The ground state properties and low-lying excitations of a (quasi) one-dimensional system of longitudinally confined interacting bosons are studied. This is achieved by extending Haldane’s harmonic-fluid description to open boundary conditions. The boson density, oneparticle density matrix, and momentum distribution are obtained accounting for finite-size and boundary effects. Friedel oscilla...
متن کاملVortices In Density Wave Systems Subject To Transverse Electric Fields
In this paper we predict many interesting new properties of vortices in highly anisotropic density wave systems subject to strong transverse electric fields. We mainly concentrate on ground state properties. Besides electric field-induced vortices we consider also thermally activated vortices. A new type of temperature-driven transition between two different phases of density waves in strong fi...
